You might want to re-think your question..

You never take what you want..You take what they tell you to take and you take what the mission dictates.

What good are night vision goggles during the day?

Umm, no. Definately not. You can’t choose what you take on patrols.

As one who has had to decide on what to hump in the boonies, the rule we used was, ammo saves lives, water helps, and night vision goggles were not an issued item to us.

All Marines carry extra equipment to support their fire teams such as extra RPG rounds and ammo for M-60′s

At least we did in Vietnam.

No, you need ammo, it will be determined on the mission. Your CO or Sgt. will make sure you get enough water. If you leaving for a misssion at 5:25 pm, eventually you will complete later that night or even till the next day. You must have your night vision. At any time you must be fully equiped.
    You are a Marines-Semper Fi !!!!!!!!!!

You need to watch "Blackhawk Down" and rethink NOT having Night Vision etc…

Anyway, no, most units will have required items – and conduct some type of PCI (Pre-combat inspection) to make sure everyone has what they are supposed to.

If you’re asking can you carry extra water and ammo – hell yes you can.

Disregard the answer from "honey" it mentions a website that is anti-military

We know what to bring by the mission assignment.

Any well organized fighting unit has a packing list. the list is modified for the specific mission and the things on the list CAN’T be deviated. as far as extra stuff, before the mission it is the job of the team leader to check the packing, and insure that the solider has the proper gear, and is not carrying crap (playboy magazines, cd player with 20 cd’s) personal items are allowed (smokes, dip) also the ruck should be packed with certain items in a certain place, so any member of the team can get the item if needed (extra radio battery in the radio pouch)

I am not a marine, but I was in the 82nd, and this is how we did it
