My mouse has learned how to escape her cage! Help!?
So last night I discovered my little mouse was indeed the reincarnation of Houdini. She got out of her cage and we found her on the table just sitting there being cute. We put her back in the cage, and she found her way back out. So my boyfriend sat and watched her with his night vision goggles in the dark, and sure enough she Hulked her way out through the bars.
The problem is I can't afford another cage for our mouse, and I can't return the one I have. Our plan is to wrap something very very tightly around the outside of the cage, like a mesh wiring, so she can't escape again.
What would be the best material to get to put around the cage? Right now we have some screen for screen door around it, but I don't know if that's safe enough...?
Thanks, but it's not the door. It's the sides of the cage she's escaping from.

I have my mice in a large fish tank with a mesh top. Its not as airy as a cage but it is secure. You can get a 10 gallon tank with top for less than $20. It cost way less then a new cage. Good luck!

Most screen door screening nowadays is made of synthetic fiber, and easy for a mouse to chew through. If yours is metal, it will do for now, but…
If you can, get an old (or new) aquarium. Screened lids are available in most areas to convert them into small animal cages, and they are very secure.
As long as her cage is on a table or shelf where she cannot climb down, there is no harm in letting her run free. Rodents have poor eyesight, and if they can’t see a place to hop to, they won’t jump. My son had rats in an open cage on a shelf next to an old-fashioned radiator. they freely hung out on the shelf and the radiator (when it wasn’t hot), and they rarely made the journey to the floor except by accident.
If you must adapt your existing cage, then I would recommend hardware cloth, a galvanized wire mesh with 1/4" spaces. But to buy enough to surround a whole cage would cost almost as much as a small fish tank.
I would also recommend you get more mice, at least one. Mice are social animals and fare much better when they have a friend or two around. They are also more fun and entertaining because of their antics when they play together and groom each other while socializing.

hahaha this happened to mwe with one of my 3 week old babies. i had left their wheel on top of the cage and i walked into my room and she had escaped and was playing on it- scary moment
mesh sounds good but make sure all the gaps are covered. ummm… if you get a tank (plastic with only bars on the top) she shouldn’t be able to get out (as long as the bars aren’t broken like they were for me lol) – they aren’t too expensive
