Today, night vision goggles and other night vision devices are put to use in a variety of ways - anything from wildlife observation and marine safety to neighborhood watch patrols and search parties.
Night vision devices are rated in Generations beginning with Generation 1. Each subsequent generation is characterized by increased brightness and ability to see in the dark.
Generation 1 night vision is the most common and most affordable. They are best used for activities such as home security, boating and wildlife observation where you light that is equivalent to bright moonlight. You might find it useful to add an infrared or "IR" light for better illumination.
Generation 2 night vision devices are, of course, more expensive than Generation 1. They do, however, offer a significant performance increase at lower light levels. You will also find less geometric distortion. They are best used in light equivalent to what you see during a full to thin moon phase and usually give you farther range than Generation 1.
Generation 3 devices require even less light but provide significantly brighter and higher resolution images. These devices can be used on cloudy nights and under starlight. With the shift in technology used to manufacture them, they also perform better for longer.
Generation 4 night vision devices work well at extremely low light levels and provide stunning results in resolution and target detection range.
A word of caution: There are some legal restrictions around exporting some of these devices, especially Generation 3 and 4, out of the country. Make sure that you are diligent in checking regulations if plan to take or send them out of the U.S.
